‘NOW & Other Tragedies’
Brisbane institute of art (2026)
‘NOW and Other Tragedies’ draws together a series of new paintings that focus primarily on portraiture as a means for exploring the human condition. Using art history as a starting point, the exhibition takes the historic traditions of oil painting as a means for examining links between the past and our present predicaments. The exhibition title makes reference to the genre of ‘tragedy’ which traces its origins back to Ancient Greece, and which has been influential to many art forms largely up until the 20th Century. Pervasive to the human experience, tragedy forces a confrontation with the limitations of human reason and the uncontrollable, often catastrophic nature of life. Similarly, this exhibition presents a visual reflection on the unique forms of human tragedy we witness today while exploring what tragedy painting could look like in a contemporary context.
This exhibition helped raise funds for Medecins Sans Frontieres (Doctors Without Borders) which provides vital medical services during humanitarian emergencies and disasters around the world.
